Week 7 Extra credit reading: Pattanaik”s Calendar Art: Part B

This video had three parts; Ardhanari’s secret, Shiva’s secret part 1 and Shiva’s secret part 2.
The first part describes that for Hindus, there is no limit in one form about God. God is expressed through animals, plants and various other forms.  The video describes God as the observer, the one who acts, the one who sense and the one who responds. God represents the verbs: creating, sustaining and destroying. Goddesses represents the wealth, knowledge and power. It talks about Upanishad, dating back to 500 B.C and the truth that changes and the truth that doesn’t change. It also talks about two complimentary truth; in change we seek permanence, in movement we seek stillness and in sound we seek silence.
In Shiva’s secret it talks about Shiva, the destroyer. Shiva destroys Kama, Yama and Tripura which means destroyer of desire, death and of three worlds. Kama is the desire that we have, Yama is the keeper of karmic accounts. Wheel of life stops with the death of Yama. The three world is land, atmosphere and sky. In our life it relates to our private world, public world and all the rest there is. Shiva destroys the need of world around us, our desire of life and the fear or death.

The second part describes the event about Shiva’s transformation from the hermit to the householder. Sati, Shiva’s first wife killed herself because her father didn’t invite Shiva to his palace. Sati was reborn as Parvati. She worshipped Shiva and asked to be his wife. It also talks about society and its judgement.  Shiva represent the mind that is not the slave of matter. It also compares our life with the water flowing out of a broken pot. The water drips continuously, so, we have to remind ourselves to keep moving with each passing moment. We have to utilize this finite time we have to discover the truth of spirit and matter.
