Week 7 Reading Diary: The Mahabharata

The Mahabharata is filled with a lot of emotions, a huge family dispute with love and hate. The fight between the Pandavas and the Kauravas led to the separation of family members and a battle between the family members. Arjuna for most of the battle seemed hesitated to fight against his own blood. He wept and cried when he slayed Bhisma. The part that Abhimanyu got trapped alone behind the enemy lines and got killed was the part that made me sad. Arjuna who didn’t want to fight the battle lost his own son in the battle. Arjuna then vows to slay Jayadratha, who was responsible for Avhimanyu’s death. Ghatotkacha, son of Bhima  gets killed in the battle. It is amazing how much power all the characters has in the Mahabharata. Bhisma could choose when he died. Bhisma was waiting to give up his life after he instructed the survivor of the battle on how to rule the world that he has survived. This is amazing! Pandava gets revenge on Kaurava by slaying Dushashana and Duryodhana. Yudhisthira becomes the new king.
It is interesting to read about the afterlife after in Swarga. Yudhisthira meets all of his Kaurava brothers and his son, his father, mother, Krishna in Swarga after he gives up his life on earth. This story backs up the whole idea behind Hinduism, Life after death. This makes me feel like there is Swarga and there is life after this life on earth. Our physical body dies but our soul remains harmless and never dies.

The Mahabharata was an interesting story to read, it refreshed my memories from what I had heard as a child. Jealousy led to this battle, Jealousy made the two members of the same family go against each other and led to various acts done in other to harm each other.
