Far away
from this land, where people did not exist anywhere around, there was a forest
with a group of evil foxes. They would meet at night and plan to hunt and kill
animals for them to feed. After killing and eating thousands of animals, they
were famous for being one of the most dangerous groups of animals in the
forest. Every one in the forest was aware except for this group of crabs.
One day a
fox seated himself on a stone of stream and wept aloud. The crabs came up to
ask him, “Friend, why are you crying?”
“Alas!”
said the fox, “I have been abandoned by my kindred out of the wood, and have no
place to go.”
“Why did
they do that?” said the crabs, in a tone of pity.
“Because,”
said the fox, “they said I should come up with a master plan to kill all the
innocent crabs in this forest and I refuse to do that.”
After a
intense meeting, the crabs decide to let the fox stay the night with them, as
the fox had been thrown out of his kindred.
Night
came and the fox said, “Would you want to go for a walk in the moonlight?”
“I know
you all are very scared to walk at night due to the fear of getting attacked.
But I will be here to defend you against any foe.”
The crabs
in excitement followed him with
pleasure. While they were all on the way, the fox made a low moan in the
direction of an adjacent wood and a number of fox started to appear.
This was after all
the foxes’ plan to hunt down all the crabs. Little did they know that the crabs
were one step ahead of the game, a pride of lions appeared in no time attacking
all the foxes at once killing half of them and letting the other half run with
fear.
When the banquet was
over the crabs said to each other, “ My friends, there is a cunning in
cunning.”

Author Note. In the
original fable the fox pretends to be abandoned by its kindred. The crabs
really think he is telling the truth and decide to let him in without knowing
their intentions. The fox tricks them into going for a walk and calls a group
of fox and kill all the crabs and eat them all. The good does not win over the
evil in the original story.
Bibliography. The
story based on a fable “ The Fox and The Crabs” in Indian Aesop, by Ramaswami
Raju, illustrated by The Baldwin Project.
Nicely done. The way you wrote the story was great. I liked your way of ending the story most. Where the evil foxes does not win over the crabs. Bad foxes making crabs fool and innocent crabs believed. But again the positive side was that the crabs did not let fox’s plan to work. However, the original story was miserable, where foxes won.
ReplyDeleteI love the ending of your story! I never knew lions and crabs were allies! I also like that sneaky fox meme that moves back and forth. That’s great that you changed the story to where the good win over evil. In a lot of Aesop’s fables that I read through, the characters usually have to learn lessons the hard way.
ReplyDeleteGreat story! I like how you changed the ending to be more positive. I wonder why the original story chose to use crabs and foxes? That just seems like such an odd combination. What was it that motivated you to write about this story? If you were to add something, I would be interested to read little bit more about the lions. Maybe there was a rivalry between them and the foxes, explaining why the crabs could persuade them to ambush the foxes. The banquet at the end could also be expanded on to add some more detail and really build up the presentation of the moral of the story. Where was the banquet? Was it a celebration? Was there a king crab that presented the moral?
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this story! I enjoyed reading it.
Shristi,
ReplyDeleteI like your twist on the traditional Fox and the Crabs story. I particularly like how many of these old fables have animals as characters. I instantly know the archetype of the character, and what personality traits I should expect from them. For instance, Foxes will always be cunning and roguish in my mind. Good luck with the rest of the writing in your semester.
